A Sedgwick County inmate, housed in the medical clinic, was found unresponsive in his cell by his cellmate on April 6, 2022, at about 12:23 p.m. The inmate had chronic medical issues prior to incarceration. After immediate medical attention from onsite staff and responding EMS personnel, the 82 year old man was pronounced dead shortly before 1:06pm. The preliminary cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy.

 

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Investigation Division were notified. The inmate’s family has been notified of his death and his identity is being withheld at their request at this time. The inmate was being held in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on misdemeanor charges and had been in custody since March 15, 2022.

 

The Sedgwick County Detention Facility has booked over 5,800 people so far this year. This is the third in-custody death for 2022.
