The Sedgwick County Sheriff would like to address a recent story published on May 18, 2023. While we appreciate the media's efforts to cover the internal investigation conducted by our organization, there are certain aspects that we would like to clarify.

We understand the public's interest in obtaining accurate information, and as such, we are committed to providing transparent and reliable updates. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office does not disclose the details of internal investigations. We consider these personnel records. As a result, no further information regarding this incident will be released.

When conducting an investigation into an allegation of misconduct by a member of the Sheriff’s Office, three factors are evaluated; is the allegation true, if true, what is the impact on the operations of the organization and what is the impact on the public we serve.

When an allegation of misconduct is sustained, the goal of the disciplinary process is to correct the behavior, ensure the employee understands the negative impact the behavior has on our organization and the public, and to bring the employee into compliance with the standards and policies of the Sheriff in order to achieve our mission.

The Sheriff stated that having sexual relations while on duty is not, in and of itself, an offense, which would be result in termination. In this particular instance, based upon the facts known, had the involved employees all been truthful and the allegation sustained, disciplinary action would have been taken.  Those employees that were found to have not violated the standards and policies of the Sheriff are still members of the organization and continue to provide valuable service to the people of Sedgwick County.

Outside of the commission of a criminal act, the most grievous violation is one of untruthfulness. The Core Values of the Sheriff’s Office are: Integrity, Duty, Ethics, Attitude, Leadership and Service. Dishonesty is contrary to these values and will not be tolerated.
