Department of Children and Families (DCF)

DCF administers a number of income-based programs to help individuals or families meet household needs:

  • The Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) helps qualifying households pay their heating bill from January through March.
  • Childcare Assistance provides qualifying Kansas families a subsidy to pay for childcare services from children ages 13 and under, or who are age 13-18 and cannot care for themselves.
  • The Food Assistance (SNAP) program serves as the first line of defense against hunger. Qualifying families will receive monthly benefits to buy eligible food items or seeds to grow food for their household. Free classes about nutrition, cooking, and physical activity are also available.
  • The Successful Families program offers employment and support services to low-income families. Support may include cash assistance known as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

Services for youth and young adults:

  • Family Crisis Response Helpline - This service assists caretakers of individuals 20 and younger who are experiencing a severe behavioral or mental health crisis. It is available at no-cost 24/7 by calling 1-833-441-2240.
  • If you are a parent or caretaker of a child who has severe behavioral issues, or you are overwhelmed and need support, call 1-800-CHILDREN or visit their website, anytime day or night to be connected with resources to help support your family.
  • The Independent Living program provides services and supports individuals ages 14 to 27 who have been placed in foster care or state custody gain the skills and services required to live independently. This can include housing and transportation assistance, medical services, and education.
