Contractor Licensing

MABCD follows adopted code for Sedgwick County and that code includes licensing of contractors and certification of MABCD employees and business agents. MABCD requires homeowners to pass electrical, plumbing, water heater and mechanical exams if a homeowner wants to do specific work on his/her owned and occupied home. The purpose of this duty is to provide accountability and a level of knowledge to help protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Sedgwick County.

New Contractor Licenses (General and Trade)

The forms below are necessary to obtain a new MABCD building/general contractor’s license for unincorporated Sedgwick County, the City of Wichita and small cities in MABCD’s jurisdiction (See jurisdiction list). Please complete and return all items to our office for processing.

Items to Submit:

  1. Application General --OR-- Application Trade
    • Complete the front and back of the contractor license application.
    • Make sure everyone signs the application. (Qualified person AND Owner/Sole proprietor/all Partners/Officer of Corporation/LLC)
    • NOTE: If you are a sole proprietor, all forms must be filled out "applicant name dba company name." (Example - Julie Jones dba Best Builder Company)
  2. Trade Certificate (Trade Certificate Application for Master/Qualified Person)
  3. Test Results (Qualified Person for General Contractor/Master for Trade)
    • A copy of Kansas Standard ICC exam.
    • Exam NOT taken in Kansas? Please submit the ICC test release form. You must score 75 percent or better to qualify.
  4. Certificate of Liability insurance (at least $300,000 in General Liability) showing MABCD as the certificate holder.
    Certificate Holder MUST read:

    • Name of insured must match the company name on application. In the case of a sole proprietor, insurance is for “applicant name dba company name
    • Address of the insured matches address of applicant’s local/business office.
  5. Worker's Compensation certificate of insurance.
  6. Auto certificate of insurance.
    • If you are not required by State law to have business coverage for your fleet, please return a signed and notarized copy of the auto insurance waiver.
  7. Certificate of Good Standing from the Secretary of the State of Kansas. Not required for Sole Proprietor.
  8. Qualified Person Declaration Page.
  9. Company Officers Signature Page.
  10. Authorization for Qualified Person to do business for the company (pull permits, schedule inspections, etc.) Not required for Sole Proprietor.
    • Provide a letter on company letterhead from all partners or officer stating that the qualified person is capable of binding the company in contracts.
  11. Roofing Only - Completed State of Kansas Roofer’s Registration paperwork showing the State of Kansas Roofer Registration number.
  12. Pay fees.

General Contractor License Renewal

Items to Submit: - Bring or upload 4 items (application plus insurance certificates (3) - see below for details)

  1. Application
    • Complete the front and back of the contractor license application.
    • Make sure everyone signs the application. (Qualified person AND Owner/Sole proprietor / all Partners / Officer of Corporation/LLC)
    • NOTE: If you are a sole proprietor, all forms must be filled out "applicant name dba company name". Example - Julie Jones dba Best Builder Company.
  2. Certificate of Liability insurance (at least $300,000 in General Liability) showing MABCD as the certificate holder.
    Certificate Holder MUST read:

    • Name of insured MUST MATCH the company name on application. In the case of a sole proprietor, insurance is for “applicant name dba company name.”
    • Address of the insured matches address of applicant’s local/business office.
  3. Worker's Compensation certificate of insurance or updated waiver.
  4. Auto certificate of insurance or updated waiver.
  5. Pay fees.
  6. **Waivers must be signed and notarized**

Trade License Renewal (Trade Licenses may not be renewed online).

Items to Submit: 

  1. Application
    • Complete the front and back of the contractor license application.
    • Make sure everyone signs the application. (Qualified person AND Owner/Sole proprietor / all Partners / Officer of Corporation/LLC)
    • NOTE: If you are a sole proprietor, all forms must be filled out "applicant name dba company name". Example - Julie Jones dba Best Builder Company.
  2. Trade Certificate (Trade Certificate Application for Master / Qualified Person). - Must Submit master's Certification at the Same Time as License Renewal
  3. Continuing Education Required - 
  4. Certificate of Liability insurance (at least $300,000 in General Liability) showing MABCD as the certificate holder.
