Extreme Heat Do's and Don'ts


  • Drink a lot of fluids, even if you aren't thirsty
  • Wear sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher 
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, or sugared sodas because they can make fluid leave your body faster
  • Stay indoors if at all possible 
  • Wear light-colored, loose clothing
  • Stay in the shade
  • Try to limit outdoor activity to when it's coolest, like in the morning or evening hours
  • Give pets plenty of water or bring them inside 


  • Drink ice-cold drinks; they can cause stomach cramping 
  • Leave any living being in a closed car 
  • Skimp on water. If you are outside a lot in even 90 degree weather, you can lose a half gallon of water in 10 minutes
